What propelled you into the entrepreneurial space? And what do you enjoy most about being a founder?
The opportunity to design a school that is aligned to my value and vision for learning is what propelled me into this work. After more than 15 years in education including higher ed, early childhood, non-profit, governance, and corporate, I have seen the best and the worst of education at every level. Working to launch Capital Experience Lab Public Charter School gives me an opportunity to work with amazing educators to design a school with the best practices for student success.
Tell me about an experience you had as an entrepreneur or in starting your company that exemplified one of Camelback's core values.
The CapX journey exemplifies ruthless patience. We could have applied for our school years ago because we loved our idea, however the school was not for us, it is for the kids. It was absolutely important that students and families loved what CapX Lab could become. The real-time feedback informed every component of our school design. While the foundation of our work is rooted in adolescent learning science and SEL development, crafting a meaningful student experience was most important. CapX is a place where students grow and hone their skills to be ruthless in the pursuit of the life they want from themselves.
Is there anyone from the #camelbackfam you'd like to shout-out?
I want to shout-out CBV Program Manager Caroline Lutkewitte. I value her calm approach and smile. No matter what's happening we knew from day one of the CBV fellowship that we were going to be alright. Throughout the pandemic Caroline made sure we had all the things we needed to be successful. Everything from tech support to gift boxes. When Caroline is around you don't have to worry you can just work and be great. She is the greatness behind the machine.
How are you and/or your team adapting to the challenges of the coronavirus crisis? What are you most proud of overcoming in recent months?
We are most proud of our ability to connect with students to engage in our virtual programming. While everyone is surely exhausted by zoom, students said yes to our learning opportunities because the learning is meaningful to them. We have curated a learning experience that is distinctly different from their regular school. This continues to prove that the CapX Lab experience can be impactful virtually or in-person.
We are also excited to have added to our educator team virtually. New teachers saying yes to the CapX Lab model is one thing, but once they take it back to their schools and implement it, we know we are shifting instructional approaches.
